This 2 day advanced course is designed to provide you with the skills and confidence to get yourself out of trouble while rock climbing.
Learn what to do if the lead climber or belayer is injured or your rope becomes jammed while rappelling. Learn how to assist another group in trouble and solve other problems along the way.
This course will accelerate your learning and give you the skills and confidence to get yourself and your climbing partners out of a jam.
Prior experience top rope, multi pitch climbing and rappelling are necessary.
This course material should be essential learning for all multi-pich or alpine climbers.
Itinerary: (Can vary slightly depending on the destination.)
we will meet up at 9am and then head up to a local rock climbing venue. We will spend the next two days climbing and getting hands on experience with the techniques and skills necessary to become a confident lead climber.
Course Outline
Day 1:
Crag Hazard Recognition and risk management
Review proper fitting and selection of rock climbing equipment
Review essential knots for rock climbing
Knots and hitches for rescue applications
Review of top rope, lead climbing, and multi-pitch techniques
Review belaying a lead climber, catching falls.
Review belay considerations for multi-pich climbs
Review direct anchor belay techniques for multi-pitch climbs
Review how to fall safely
Climbing communication calls
Rope management on multi-pitch climbs and in rescue scenarios
Anchor systems and direction of pull on multi-pitch anchors
Understanding fall factor and limitations of common equipment
Techniques to stay safe while approaching or transitioning from the cliff edge and between anchors
How to escape the belay from your harness
how to escape a direct anchor belay
how ascend ropes
how to descend a loaded rope
Day 2:
hauling systems, progress capture and mechanical advantage
Load transfers
Rappelling techniques for multi-pitch climbs. Tandem rappel, Counterbalance rappel
Lowering an injured climber
How to pass knots on rappel
how to pass knots through a haul system
Practice scenarios
Transportation:
Any regular vehicle will suffice. NSM can provide transportation for up to 4 guests.
Meals:
Lunch for the day is provided
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance
If you have food allergies it is recommended to pack your own lunch.
